The Complete Guide To Etcher: How To Use It And What You Can Do With It https://ameliaroberts.com/guide-to-etcher/ Sat, 12 Mar 2022 23:36:10 +0000 https://ameliaroberts.com/?p=54 Etcher is an interesting bootable USB creator that was made by Balena. One of the main advantages of Etcher is

Etcher is an interesting bootable USB creator that was made by Balena. One of the main advantages of Etcher is that it’s cross-platform, which allows you to install this software on any OS that you want. Besides that, any OS can be flashed through Etcher, with an accent on various Linux and BSD distributions. There are over twenty Linux and BSD distributions that Etcher has built-in support for, but there shouldn’t be any problems with loading a Linux or BSD distribution that wasn’t mentioned on the website.

As long as the distribution has support booting from a USB drive, you will probably be able to create create a bootable USB without a problem. Other distributions might require extra modification before they can be booted from a USB drive, overall, creating a bootable USB through Etcher will work in most cases and satisfy the majority of your booting needs. Just like some of the other bootable USB creator software on the market, Etcherg is open-source and can be found on Github, so anyone interested can have a look at the code.

Etcher isn’t hard to use and the process will be very straightforward in most cases, but any potential problem that can occur can probably be fixed by using the command line option. All command-line options can be found on the Etcher Github page. Thus said, any issue can be fixed with a line of code even if you aren’t all that into programming, the developer, Geza Kovacs, made all potential options available on the Github page of Etcher. UNebootin perfectly represents the concept of Unix philosophy: An application that does one thing that does it perfectly.

Unfortunately, you can only put one OS on the USB drive through BalenaEtcher, unlike Rufus, which can be used to put multiple instances on multiple devices. An important feature of Etcher is that recognizes all of the USB drives that are currently inserted into your PC or MAC, this makes the whole process of flashing the USB drive much faster. It also makes the user much less prone to a mistake as it narrows down the choices that need to be made by the user. Besides detecting the drive, you can select the version of the OS you want to install, its version, navigate to the ISO image, and write down how much space you want to reserve for your installation.

Windows, Mac, and Linux users can find the download for Etcher on the website, while Linux users can also use their terminal to download it. In a few lines, Etcher will be installed, and it won’t even take longer than a few minutes. Even though the interface itself is very easy to understand, the whole application looks very old, which some people don’t like. But what’s more important is that behind the ugly design, the application works flawlessly. Beginners shouldn’t have a hard time with Etcher, but it was indeed made for advanced users that have the knowledge and need for flashing various Linux and BSD distributions.

How To Easily Recover Your Lost Files Using Recuva https://ameliaroberts.com/how-to-easily-recover-your-lost-files-using-recuva/ Wed, 02 Feb 2022 00:06:00 +0000 https://ameliaroberts.com/?p=40 If you’re looking online for a budget-friendly data recovery tool, Recuva is in your wheelhouse! If you’re looking online for a budget-friendly data recovery tool, Recuva is in your wheelhouse! It has a free as well as a minimal expense $19.95 Professional version. At this pricing, you may not care that it recovers fewer files than the other two options mentioned in this list.

If you let go of this one downside, you will find several other useful features in this software. Let’s start with the file recovery option that allows you to recover any type of rewritable storage media, including documents, music, and pictures from SD cards, USBs, external drives, and more. If you have the Professional edition, you can scan and recover files from a virtual hard drive as well.

The secure deletion capability ensures that once you have deleted the files, they couldn’t be recovered. This feature is valuable when you want to delete highly sensitive data. Recuva has a military-standard deletion mechanism that overwrites data so no one can restore it. The application is also portable, which enables you to boot it from a USB to restore your data without the threat of losing it.

When it comes to the user experience, Recuva is different from other software in this category because it offers a more guided approach to the recovery process rather than letting the user explore. Initially, you will come across a wizard-type interface that will show you the options to select the file format you want to retrieve and where you want to focus the recovery. This feature is especially helpful for people who are not that tech-savvy and unfamiliar with data recovery. However, if you don’t want a guided interface, you can jump directly to the main interface and take advantage of its usability.

If you’re unable to find your required files through the initial search, you can run a deep scan that searches raw data for file marks that help in distinguishing the type of file of the restored data. You can even scan for undeleted files, which is helpful when you are scanning a damaged drive for recovering data.

Coming to customer support, users of the free version won’t find any direct customer support, but they can leverage the community forum to find solutions to the common issues. Users who have signed up for the Professional version have access to priority support. They can log on to the priority support section and acquire official, custom help. However, Recuva does not offer support through live chat or phone.

The final verdict about this software is that it’s overall good, but other online applications offer better features and extensive recovery. The catch-22 is that they have a higher cost as well. Therefore, ultimately it depends on your application and frequency of use. If your data recovery needs aren’t that frequent and don’t involve complicated files, you could do with Recuva. Features like secure file overwrite, deep scan tool, formatted drive scanning, and clean and simple interface make it a good performer in this list!

The Ultimate Guide To WinRAR: Everything You Need To Know https://ameliaroberts.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-winrar-everything-you-need-to-know/ Fri, 14 Jan 2022 20:44:00 +0000 https://ameliaroberts.com/?p=29 If you’re someone who regularly uses a computer or laptop for handling large documents or media files, you must be

If you’re someone who regularly uses a computer or laptop for handling large documents or media files, you must be familiar with WinRAR. The software is widely used to compress files or extract data from compressed files.

Even though WinRAR is a paid tool, you will find most people using the free version, which is still accessible after a 40-day trial period. The paid version starts from $21 and increases with the number of users and computers. Since its release in 1995, WinRAR has become a popular file compression and archiver utility, with availability in more than 50 languages and 32 and 64-bit editions. The interesting part is that this software is supported on various operating systems except Windows 10.

Let’s expand a bit on the features offered by this software. Anyone looking beyond the native ZIP functionality of Windows to get support for versatile file formats can opt for this tool as it offers the flexibility to create archives according to your requirements. WinRAR supports an extended list of formats, including RAR, ZIP, JAR, 7Z, ISO, Z, XZ, TAR, UUE, CAB, LZH, GZ, and ARJ.

The user-friendly interface of WinRAR makes it easier for you to access its wide range of features without any hassle. A wizard visible at the start assists in carrying out different tasks, ranging from compressed file creation to virus scan in any compressed file. This wizard tool is especially beneficial for users who are new to this tool.

To create archives in WinRAR, you can select from multiple configuration settings available in the tool, such as spanning multiple archive files and maintaining NTFS security settings. The usability of the software presents these options in a way that doesn’t overwhelm the users.

Another valuable feature of this tool is that it allows you to save a combination of archival settings in the form of a ‘profile’ to simplify reusability and save time. This profile can be applied to new archives, without you having to configure the settings all over again. This is as close to automation as WinRAR can take you by cutting down on repetitive actions.

When it comes to performance, WinRAR is fast at extracting files but comparatively, the compression speed is slightly slower. A test was conducted to check the speed of compression involving 1.78 GB of data including 20 files of different formats and sizes containing images, documents, audio, and video. WinRAR took 2 mins 6 secs to compress these files into 1.77 GB data – the performance can definitely use some improvement!

The one drawback of this utility is concerned with privacy. The password manager saves the countersigns in the Registry, in plain text. Therefore, anyone who is moderately good at operating computers can start snooping into your system and access the passwords in no time. Besides the lack of security features, WinRAR is an easily comprehensible software that includes advanced features that are accessible by technically inept users as well. Moreover, the company website includes a comprehensive FAQ section that can answer all your concerns and queries.
